What is a casement window?
Pictured – a non flush casement window.
Casement windows open from the top or sides, they never slide or tilt or turn.
In most of our homes casement windows feature as the most common rectangular windows, with one or more openings, you probably have many.
If a window does not open, then it is a fixed window and not a casement window.
Casement windows come in any size, made to measure, flush or non flush.
Casement windows can be made of aluminium or UPVC, coloured or white, they can form part of a bay or bow window or a conservatory.
If the central frame moves, with the opening vent, leaving an open vista then it is a french window not a casement window.
Cottage windows can be casement windows.
Flush Casements or non Flush Casements which are better?
Pictured – a flush casement window.
Flat windows were originally wooden, where the opening vent closed flush into the frame. If you are looking for a UPVC or aluminium window that looks like a wooden window, choose flush.
If your budget is tight non flush are normally less expensive.
Finally, a non flush window, often referred to as a storm-proof window, has a double rebate meaning it seals on the outside of the opening vent and the inside, making a better seal for harsh weather or exposed elevations.

Your FAQ's about casement windows...
Find out more about traditional casement windows here when we answer your frequently asked questions.
Do casement windows open in or out?
All our casement windows open outwards as standard. Tilt and turn windows open in. It is however possible to reverse engineer casement windows so they open inwards and therefore would be externally glazed and therefore would require glass locks to be fitted, this we can do..
Can casement windows be opened from outside?
Our casement window frames are tightly sealed when they’re closed and latched. Casement windows can only be opened from the inside when unlocked. A casement window cannot easily be forced open from the outside, without completely smashing the frame and likely the glass. This is due to its multiple locking points, roller cams, shoot bolts and frame dog bolts which protect all aspects of forced entry.
Are casement windows better than sliding sash windows?
Casement windows close more tightly than sliding sash windows making them more popular and more secure. Sliding sash windows are more popular in Victorian and Georgian properties and properties that open out onto a walkway. The sliding sash cause no obstruction when open whereas the casements opening vents would cause an obstruction.
Can my old casement windows be recycled?
When we replace windows we always return the old windows to our warehouse facility where we separate the frames, glass and hardware. Each then leaves us to go to specialist recycling and future use. Nothing is wasted.
Are new casement windows quieter?
Standard double glazing in new traditional casement windows is far quieter than old single or old double glazed casement windows. However, if you live on a busy road or suffer from noise pollution there are lots of additional measures you could take to reduce unwanted noise further. The simplest is selecting a 6mm laminate glass sheet with a 4mm glass sheet within double glazing, the thin polymer interlayers within the laminate acts as a sound buffer, with the two different thicknesses deflecting more sound than two the same. Triple glazing with or without a 6mm laminate also reduces noise pollution and the ultimate would be to chose a specialist noise reducing glass, we recommend and fit Stadip silence from Saint Gobain glass.
Are casement windows expensive?
All our casement windows offer excellent value for money and with a 20 year guarantee they have at least 20 years to repay themselves in energy fuel savings. White UPVC has been around in its earlies form for over 30 years and has proved its worth over and over again. Savings will also be made in materials and time against painting and repairing wooden windows.
Why are your traditional casement windows guaranteed for double the time of almost all other window companies and suppliers?
Our excellent fitting standard, our own Service Engineers, our high quality products and our excellent suppliers help us achieve our 20 year guarantee. All our retail windows actually come with three guarantees spanning 20 years, the first, we give a 10 year insurance backed guarantee that covers virtually* everything and we pay your insurance premium in full. Second is our full 10 year parts and labour guarantee which also covers everything. Then for the final 10 years, (year 10 to 20) we give an industry leading 10 year extended guarantee that covers parts, though a sensible fitting fee would be charged. Every window and door we sell will operate perfectly for 20 years…or we will fix it.
*Exclusions
As with new cars colour fading is not covered. Roof glass has a 10 year, 5 Star and Insurance guarantee. If a manufacturer ceases any product or part we will use the closest match available.
Please do not attempt to repair or adjust yourselves leave any issues to one of our Service Engineers.
Can the glass be removed from outside on your traditional casement windows?
All our UPVC casement and almost all our aluminium casement windows have the glass fitted from the inside. This has two main advantages over externally glazed windows. First the glass can not be removed by burglars from outside to gain entry to your home. Secondly, the external UPVC glazing bars which hold the glass in, will become brittle over time, which means if an older window is broken, the glass beads may be obsolete and the whole window would have to be replaced instead of just the broken unit.
It is worth noting Aluminium beads do not suffer in the same way and glass locks are normally fitted to externally beaded Aluminium casement windows. Furthermore the glass units in Aluminium windows are compressed into the frame by internal rubber gasket so, although the glass is externally fitted, the rubbers have to be removed first on the inside.
