When embarking on a window buying journey, whether you do it once or more, you need to source a window style that conforms to your home’s age and existing look.
5 Star understands that it’s not always easy identifying an appropriate solution, so we thought it helpful to round up some of the main styles to assist with your decision-making process.
Casement, Sash & Tilt and Turn Windows
Casement – Side-hinged and its affixed handle can be used to create an outward opening. Maximises views due to having no central mullion. Excellent for ventilation and suited to contemporary and traditional residences. Tight sealing and premium glazing assures you of energy efficiency.
Sash – Features vertical or horizontal sliding panels and typically seen at Victorian and Georgian homes. Elegant and easily maintained, attains medium to high thermal efficiency with suitable glazing.
Tilt and Turn – Can offer a slight inward tilt at the top or be fully swung internally. Helps with airflow, maintenance and security. Popular at modern abodes and excellent insulates when thoroughly sealed.

Sliding, Bay & Bow Windows
Sliding – Useful in small rooms, possessing horizontal gliding sashes. Fosters convenient airflow and light. A moderate insulator when housing satisfactory glazing.
Bay – Normally three-sectioned (one central window and two angled counterparts), projecting outwardly from a wall. Magnifies light and space. A great fit for period residences. Energy-efficient glazing is a must because of the large surface area.
Bow – Similar to the bay window, but has a more curved shape and 4-6 matching panels. Uplifts external views and befits Victorian and modern dwellings. Offers moderate energy efficiency.

Rooflight/Skylight & Flush Windows
Rooflight/Skylight – Styled into the roofs of lofts and extensions to funnel light into them. Either vented or fixed and very energy-efficient if accommodating double or triple glazing.
Flush – Crafted from a low-maintenance UPVC or aluminium, sits perfectly flat in the frame, creating a sleek, clean aesthetic. Apt for period and modern properties.

Some Extra Points To Note
Ultimately, your selected window style should reflect your individual preferences, home’s age and its styling.
Frames – The four primary window materials are UPVC, aluminium, timber and composite.
Glass – As well as double and triple glazing, you can also specify low-e, tinted and frosted glass.
Cost – UPVC casements tend to be the most affordable; price is affected by the amount of customisation, material type etc.

You know you’ve got the correct window style when it combines utmost style, security and performance. Any window with energy-efficient glazing, reliable locking and a robust frame is usually a safe bet! Maybe we can discuss it face-to-face? Arrange a meeting with 5 Star by booking an appointment.
